Unlock your love, Venice

Beginning today, locals will begin attaching a sign on those "Lover's Locks" that are attached to bridges all over Venice.  It's a grassroots campaign initiated by Alberto Toso Fei, a well known Venetian author, to enlighten visitors to our city that locks on Venice's bridges are illegal.

For one week, people will be posting the poster in shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, as well as attaching them directly on the locks. It's an ingenious idea. I too, will be out with my handfull of signs tomorrow and Wednesday, doing my part.

I ask you to please, pass the word for Venice. The more people who know that it is not ok to put a lock on a bridge here, the better.  One small step for Venice...

Oh, how I wish I was there to walk along with you.

Please save one for me, if you have one to spare. Grazie.

What a great idea. I hate those things. I think it is vandalism...and a really stupid idea.

Sandra- the acting mayor of Venice kept his word- he had a work crew on the Accademia bridge for almost a full week. They cut off every lock. Now they are saying they will enforce a 50 Euro fine for every infraction of the law. That means every person who puts a lock on any bridge can be fined. Yahoo! Next step- get the locks off every bridge in the city. A lot of that work will happen on Sept 28 when we have a CleanUp Day scheduled. Citizens will take to the streets all day to paint over grafitti and remove locks. I will be out there again!

Eyesore that it is, our local metro system is doing some repair work on one of the lines. They installed a chain link fence and actually ENCOURAGED people to put locks on the fence. Of course, as soon as the work is over, the fence and locks will be taken down. But it just goes to show you that one persons eyesore is another persons marketing opportunity. I agree -- I think it is stupid. Don't know what damage it might do to the bridges though.
